Press Cuttings : Radio Times and 1992 wagons

Item type: Press Cuttings
Archive reference: YMP/F/13/1/11
Date/year: 1992
Description: 19 June 1992, a Radio Times article about a BBC Radio 2 Arts Programme mentioning Mystery Plays, with a photograph.  Stored as F/13/1/11.
On 20 and 21 June 1992, Meg Twycross of the University of Lancaster co-ordinated the presentation of five of the Plays from the Passion sequence.  This followed the medieval practice of staging the plays on wagosns in the streets.  Stonegate and Petergate were used as the route (Medieval World magazine, May 1992, attributes this to those streets forming the king's route through the town to the Minster.) At four stations were these plays: Bretton Hall, the Crucifixion; Univ of York Lords of Misrule, the Death and Burial; Durham Medieval Drama Group the Harrowing of Hell; Joculatores Lancastrienses, The Resurrection; Univ of Groningen, Christ's appearance to Mary Magdalene.  Here is a photograph of the Harrowing of Hell in Stonegate, where the crowds blocked the street!
