Press Cuttings : 1984 preview and review of Mystery Play

Item type: Press Cuttings
Archive reference: YMP/F/11/4
Date/year: March and June 1984
Description:
On the front page of The Guardian on 8 March 1984 was a photograph - no article but a caption: 'A black actor, Keith Jefferson, has been chosen to play God in the York Mystery Plays this summer with Jane Snowden as the Virgin Mary.' The choice of local black teacher and actor Keith Jefferson created a lot of media interest in this year.  He also played Herod.
John Barber in the Daily Telegraph of 11 June 1984 reviews the York Festival and Mystery Plays.  The review is generally positive. Includes a photograph with caption: 'A scene from the York Mystery Plays performed in the ruins of St Mary's Abbey, York. The production continues until July 1.'
Here is a photograph donated by Gweno Williams of Keith Jefferson in costume as God behind the scenes.
